A guide to the Turkish exams (TÖMER & YDS)
Introduction
If you plan to study, work, or live in Turkey, a Turkish language certificate is one of the most important requirements. The two main internationally recognized Turkish language exams are:
- TÖMER (Türkçe Öğretim Merkezi Sınavı)
- YDS (Yabancı Dil Sınavı – used for universities and immigration)

What Is the TÖMER Exam?

Differences Between TÖMER and YDS
- Organizer: TÖMER is run by Ankara University, the YDS by Turkey's ministry of science and education.
- Use: TÖMER for study and general work; the YDS for university admission and public-sector employment.
- Language levels: TÖMER from beginner to advanced; the YDS from intermediate to advanced.
- Speaking section: included in TÖMER; limited in the YDS.
- Scoring: in TÖMER each skill is scored separately; the YDS focuses on reading comprehension and grammar.
